Recycling in Austria: 90% separate glass carefully

Waste separation is apparently not that difficult, at least when it comes to waste glass. Noisy Association of Waste Advice Austria (VABÖ) 90% of consumers separate their glass packaging “carefully”. Every year around 68.000 tons of used glass are collected in a total of 270.000 waste glass containers in Austria. 80% of this is recycled in glassworks in Germany, the rest due to shorter transport routes in neighboring countries, according to the VABÖ.

A high collection rate pays off in glass processing and production: According to experts, every 10% of waste glass reduces energy consumption by 3% and CO2 emissions by 7%. “To make this possible, glass needs to be carefully separated because different types of glass have different chemical compositions and melt at different temperatures. (...) Sorting by color and avoiding incorrect throws (of other types of glass such as flat glass, glass dishes, laboratory glasses and other materials such as metal, etc.) is essential for the recycling process, ”says VABÖ.
