The past and the future of the European Green Deal 🇪🇺

No Description

The future of European environmental policy was discussed at the event “The past and the future of the European Green Deal” on Monday, April 22nd. Among other things, the question discussed was why the EU is good and why the EU elections are crucial for the climate, nature and environment.

It started with Barbara Steffner from the EU Commission, who presented the key points of the implementation of the European Green Deal in her presentation. Patrick ten Brink, Secretary General of the European Environment Bureau, then presented how the European Green Deal is perceived from the perspective of the environmental movement.

Jürgen Schneider (Head of the Climate and Energy Section at the BMK), Christina Plank (Boku) and Colin Roche (Friends of the Earth Europe) took part in the subsequent discussion. It was acknowledged that a lot of progress could be made in the EU, but also that we are still far from reaching our goal. Further steps are necessary in the area of climate protection, but important Green Deal projects have not been implemented, particularly in the areas of preserving biodiversity and sustainable agriculture.

After a break, the discussion with political representatives continued. Lena Schilling (Greens), Peter Berry (NEOS) and Andreas Preiml (SPÖ) discussed with Bernhard Zlanabitnig (EU Environment Office) and Johannes Wahlmüller (GLOBAL 2000). In the discussion, the next steps needed at the European level were discussed and the open points of Austria's climate policy were also discussed. At the end there was an appeal to go to the EU elections and to get detailed information beforehand, because the decisions at EU level are crucial for all of our futures.
