Cage keeping history, animal agony but not over

Good news: “On December 31.12.2019, 10, the 8-year transition period for the absolute ban on keeping cages in laying hens ended. Only XNUMX companies still had “designed” cages in use, and Austria will now be the first EU country in which cage keeping is completely prohibited, ”the initiators of the people's animal welfare request said.

BUT: There is no labeling requirement in the catering and commercial kitchens. According to the popular animal protection petition, more than 600 million foreign cage eggs continue to end up on domestic plates. “Horror-laden eggs from India and the Ukraine come to the kitchens in powder form and are processed there unrecognized into schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn. While our farmers rightly take care of animal welfare, we import animal torture from abroad - and in many cases we also pay for it with tax money. We urgently need the labeling of foodstuffs, otherwise such improvements will lead to absurdity, ”says Sebastian Bohrn Mena, initiator of the animal protection people's request.
