Sugar: Austrians exceed the daily dose many times over

"Austrians consume too much sugar with 33,3 kilograms a year or 91 g sugar a day and this has serious health consequences, such as obesity and diabetes," warns Prof. Dr.med. Markus Metka, gynecologist and president of the Austrian Anti-Aging Society. The Austrian population therefore misses the daily dose of 25 g or a maximum of 50 g sugar recommended by the WHO many times over.

“Over the past 40 years, the number of overweight children worldwide has increased tenfold. In Austria, this now affects around a quarter of schoolchildren. This is alarming, because high risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer or respiratory diseases are excessive body weight and unhealthy nutrition. We, the Austrian doctors, are therefore grateful for any initiative that contributes to prevention and encourages people to eat healthier. Ultimately, however, politics is required, which must create the appropriate framework. Only around two percent of total public health expenditure is made available for prevention in Austria. More should be invested there, because more intensive obesity prevention would not only save a lot of suffering, but would also reduce the follow-up costs for diet-related diseases and risk factors - such as high blood pressure, increased cholesterol, diabetes, strokes and heart attacks ”, appeals to the President of the Chamber of Physicians ao Univ.- Prof. Dr. Thomas Szekeres to the political actors involved on the occasion of the first sugar summit in the food industry.
