In 2013 a new chapter on organic cosmetics was added to the Austrian food book. As with natural cosmetics known, the ingredients may only be of natural origin (vegetable, animal and mineral origin). The only exceptions are preservatives (may also be manufactured synthetically) and emulsifiers or surfactants (may simply be processed chemically). These also apply to organic cosmetics.

Vegetable and animal ingredients that are of agricultural origin, in organic cosmetics at least 95 percent must comply with the provisions on biological / ecological production. In addition, a minimum biological content based on the final product must be present. For example, for oils / anhydrous cleaning and care products, 90 percent.

The ingredients of natural cosmetics come from natural raw materials and are obtained in defined, permitted manufacturing processes. Approved preservatives are listed in the respective standards.

As a rule, it must be indicated on products of biocosmetics, which preservatives were used ("Preserved with ...").

The best known labels for natural cosmetics are currently BDIH / COSMOS, NaTrue, EcoCert and ICADA.
