"The country helps" - Harvest workers wanted in Germany

The corona pandemic demands creative solutions and changes within a very short time. Agriculture in Germany is also faced with a special challenge: due to closed borders, workers from Eastern Europe can no longer work. Therefore, according to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, around 300.000 are missing.

Since then, many people have volunteered to help with the harvest. For example, platforms like "The country helps“Founded to mediate employers and employees. This is where people who are currently unable to carry out their own profession or other activities can help where it is necessary in the area - for example when harvesting strawberries or asparagus.

Although voluntary helpers are starting a great campaign, the situation is still difficult for farmers because they cannot plan anything or can only do so to a limited extent: some helpers can work 20 hours a week, others only three days, but full time. In addition, helpers can of course replace inexperienced workers - training takes more time for farmers. Nevertheless, the willingness to help of the citizens is a great action and sets a solidary signal in these difficult times.
