Dandelion rubber in advanced development phase

Did you know that there is already an alternative to traditional dandelion rubber? Continental, for example, is busy developing dandelion tires. The benefits: "Dandelion has the potential to be developed as a crop into an alternative, environmentally friendly source of raw materials, and could thus help reduce dependence on conventionally produced natural rubber. And that's not all: as the plant can also be grown in northern and western Europe, long transport distances to European production sites can be significantly reduced and the resources available can be handled more sustainably, "writes tire manufacturer Continental.

As part of a research project, Continental is collaborating on the industrialization of the dandelion rubber Taraxagum with the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology IME, the Julius Kühn Institute, a federal research institute for crops, and the plant breeding expert ESKUSA. The first dandelion rubber tires were presented to 2015. 2018 has even opened its own laboratory for the further research and development of dandelion rubber.
