Ökotest took a close look at 18 mascaras. The result: “Almost half of the mascaras tested fail. Your ingredients disappoint across the board. "
In two samples the laboratory even found carcinogenic arsenic (in Artdeco Volume Supreme Mascara (black1) and in a natural cosmetic product). In some L'Oréal mascaras, for example, Ökotest found allergenic substances and the critical preservative butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which is suspected of acting like a hormone in the body and possibly damaging the thyroid gland.
Also problematic in seven samples: Paraffins that contain questionable mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH) (for example the Manhattan Wow Wings Mascara and the Maybelline The Colossal Go Extreme Mascara). The Nyx On the Rise Volume Liftscara (OTRL01 black) also scores an “unsatisfactory” because the laboratory has found a formaldehyde compound in it that is “out of place” and can cause allergies.
There were seven of the mascaras tested Natural cosmetic products. Six of them received the top grade "very good" (including, for example, the glamorous volume mascara from Alverde and Laveras Butterfly Effect beautiful black).
