In Yemen, Salma and her family are facing additional difficulties as Covid-19 reaches the internally displaced person's camp they now live in after fleeing their homeland due to the ongoing conflict. Yemenis are battling a third wave of COVID that threatens 99 percent of the unvaccinated population. Muhsin Siddiquey, Oxfam's country director in Yemen, said, "Yemen has one of the highest COVID death rates in the world - it just can't handle this virus. The conflict has decimated the already fragile health system. Many people are very weak because they cannot afford to eat properly or buy basic medicines. Others cannot afford transportation to a medical center because of the ongoing fuel crisis.
“Vaccination is a simple solution that would save lives, but the international community is failing the people in Yemen who need doses now. We need the promised vaccines ... The protection of life should be more important than the protection of the excessive profits of pharmaceutical companies that have already made billions from this crisis. "
