For much of her life, Nassima campaigned for women's freedom in Saudi Arabia. In the process she lost her own. She was one of several prominent activists calling for women's right to drive and the right to do their daily business without the permission of a male “guardian”. Under the guardianship laws of Saudi Arabia, women were required to obtain a man's permission to go out and other basic needs. While these laws have been relaxed in recent months, the women who have campaigned for an end to the guardianship system remain behind bars. Nassima was arrested in July 2018 for her peaceful human rights work. She was tortured in prison. She was held alone in a cell from February 2019 to February 2020, completely isolated from other detainees. She is allowed to phone her family once a week, but no visits, not even from her lawyer.
