Use of social networks by young people is becoming "more mature"

As part of the initiative Saferinternet.at the Austrian Institute for Applied Telecommunications (ÖIAT) and ISPA - Internet Service Providers Austria commissioned a study on the life of young people in social networks and in particular on the various forms of self-expression.

It says: “Practically all of the young people surveyed in the study use social networks. They join their first social network when they are 11 years old on average. " According to the study, one trend is clearly visible: “In the past, self-portrayal was in the foreground, now keeping in contact with others is clearly the main function of social networks. This was evident even before Covid-19 and has increased again since then. "

In addition, the study authors state: "Social networks serve as a kind of digital umbilical cord to the outside world and deserve their name more than ever." And: “In second place after keeping in contact is information or entertainment. Only then do your own postings and self-presentation follow. The virtual participation of others in one's own life has become less important. "

Matthias Jax, project manager of Saferinternet.at, speaks of "signs of a development towards a more mature use of social networks by young people."
