UN Secretary-General calls for 'historic climate solidarity pact' at COP27 | Greenpeace int.

Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt: UN Secretary-General António Guterres today opened the summit of world leaders at COP27 by calling for a "historic climate solidarity pact" to cut carbon emissions and accelerate the transition to renewable energy. Led by the most polluting countries, the pact would call on all countries to make additional efforts to reduce emissions this decade in line with the 2 degree target.

In response, Yeb Saño, Greenpeace COP27 Head of Delegation said:

“The climate crisis is indeed the fight of our lives. It is vital that the voices from the Global South are truly heard and drive the decisions needed for climate solutions and building genuine solidarity. Justice, accountability and finance for the countries hardest hit by the climate crisis, past, present and future, are key to success, not only for the discussions among world leaders at COP27, but also for action who must follow their words. No more humbug, no more greenwashing.

“The Paris Agreement is based on the premise that we must all step up and step up our climate action to limit global temperature rise to less than 1,5°C. Solutions and wisdom already abound from indigenous peoples, frontline communities and youth. Polluting governments and corporations need to stop dragging themselves, they know what needs to be done, now they need to do it. The most critical turning point is when we lose our ability to care for each other and for the future - that is suicide.

The pact could be a chance to address the injustices of the past and ambush the climate. Still, with or without world leaders, the global movement, led by indigenous peoples and young people, will continue to grow. We call on leaders to engage and build trust and implement the necessary actions for the collective well-being of people and planet.”
