INITIATIVE2030: More knowledge about lived sustainability through information

Whether on the part of politics or through movements like “Fridays for future”: The topic of sustainability is omnipresent. Nevertheless, why is there often a lack of practical implementation and a general understanding of what sustainability means. For this reason, the Austrian INITIATIVE2030 would like to promote the achievement of the UN sustainability goals itself with immediate effect. Your goal: To convey practical tips for more sustainability in everyday life as simply as possible - based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Good Life Goals (GLGs) adopted by the UN.

A study by the European Environment Agency shows: Austria is one of the worst performers in Europe in terms of achieving the UN agenda for sustainable development. Compared to the front runner Belgium with more than 130 sustainability measures, only 15 steps were taken in this country to achieve the UN goals and also in terms of climate-damaging gases, Austria is one of the laggards in EU countries. In addition to measures, there is a lack of goals that are based on the realities of life of Austrians. With a series of practical tips, INITIATIVE2030 would therefore like to make it clear how we can make our everyday life more sustainable with even small changes.

The global UN sustainability goals as a starting point

Specifically, this means: The non-profit INITIATIVE2030 has set itself the goal of widely communicating the core content of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Good Life Goals (GLGs) adopted by the UN in order to actively contribute to their achievement. In addition to an improved understanding of sustainability, INITIATIVE2030 wants to offer people much more than just a content-related summary and visual comparison of the SDGs and GLGs. It should be used as a platform for active exchange between companies, NGOs, media and committed fellow campaigners and their communities.

Who is behind INITIATIVE2030?

The initiative was launched at the beginning of the year by Pia-Melanie Musil and Norbert Kraus from the CU2 creative agency To make UN climate goals strong ”, said Pia-Melanie Musil at the start of the initiative. After a short time, the two initiators succeeded in getting well-known companies and organizations such as the Senate of Economy, Pearle Austria, café + co International Holding, planetYES, Team CU500 Kreativagentur and Himmelhoch PR on board.

These and other companies have the opportunity to make their own contribution to the achievement of the UN sustainability goals by making the GLGs an integral part of their everyday corporate and personal lives. Above all, the 17 GLGs, which were developed with the help of UNESCO, the IGES Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), are intended to support both private and public persons to act sustainably and responsibly in everyday life. They contain all the measures that everyone can take for themselves with little effort in order to advance the achievement of the overarching SDGs.

The goal of INITIATIVE2030

“We are aware that it is important to define goals. However, what really counts at the end of the day is implementation. Only when we have succeeded in integrating concrete measures into our everyday life can we meet the requirements of the UN. It is therefore essential to translate the goals. INITIATIVE2030 wants to enter into an exchange with people and encourage them to deal with their attitude towards sustainability. Because only if everyone makes a contribution can we achieve the goals of the UN Agenda2030 ”, concluded Musil.
