Strong women awarded

In the Her Abilities Awards Three strong women were recently honored by Licht für die Welt in Vienna:

  • Die Schauspielerin Maysoon Zayed (USA) has been repeatedly rejected for roles because of her physical disability. She then started a career as a stand-up comedian and tours the world as a lawyer for the rights of people with disabilities.
  • Lisa Kauppinen (Finland) has been campaigning for the rights of deaf people for three decades and was instrumental in the development of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
  • Nguyen Thi Van (Vietnam) supported more than a thousand students with disabilities in their vocational training. She also founded an inclusive social enterprise and was named one of the 100 women of 2019 by the BBC.

The Her Abilities Awards is the first global award for women with disabilities who show greatness in their life or work. The initiative was launched in 2018 by the organization Licht für die Welt together with the Right Livelihood Award winner Yetnebersh Nigussie.
