Stay away from white chewing gum: dye E 171 "not sure"

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) classifies the dye titanium dioxide (E 171) as "not safe" according to the latest findings. Titanium dioxide is used in food as a very permanent white color in the form of nanoparticles. It is not soluble.

“Due to its presence in the form of nanoparticles - the particles can get into the body and accumulate there - titanium dioxide has long been the subject of criticism. In May 2021, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) also came to the conclusion that concerns about the genotoxicity of titanium dioxide particles cannot be ruled out. Genotoxicity is a harmful effect on cells in the body that leads to changes in the cellular material. The result can be cancer, ”explains the Association for Consumer Information (VKI) in a broadcast.

In France the additive E 171 is already banned in food, in Austria and in large parts of the EU this is not yet the case. E 171 is contained, for example, in coated tablets, chewing gum, baking accessories and in white coatings such as fondant. On www.vki.at/titandioxid you can see free of charge which foods the VKI was able to find in a current random survey. On the platform www.lebensmittel-check.at as well as under [email protected] Consumers can report foods that contain titanium dioxide.
