(Berlin, July 30, 2020) - Belarusian police arbitrarily arrested journalists, bloggers and political activists before the presidential election on August 9, 2020, and charged two potential candidates, Human Rights Watch said today.

The arrests raise concerns about interference and violations of freedom of expression, particularly media freedom, political freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. Many of the arrests appeared to be timed to keep the detainees locked up until at least after the elections.
