NEW REPORT: Older Persons in #Ukraine at risk during war | #ukrainerussiawar #ukrainewar
No Description
Russia's war in #Ukraine has displaced many elderly people from their homes and stolen their independence. Others cannot escape the conflict and remain in dangerous conditions.
The cost of housing and additional assistance must not be borne by Ukraine alone.
The international community must provide humanitarian assistance that prioritizes the inclusion of older people.
Russia's sweeping invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, was marked by blatant disregard for civilian life and frequent war crimes. Ukraine, where people over 60 make up almost a quarter of the population, is one of the “oldest” countries in the world. Elderly people, often reluctant or unable to flee their homes, appear to constitute a disproportionate number of civilians in areas of active hostilities and are therefore at greater risk of being killed or injured. A new report by Amnesty International shows how overlapping challenges, from disability to poverty to age discrimination, exacerbate in emergencies and put older people at increased risk.
