(Nairobi, September 23, 2020) - Guinea's security forces failed to protect people and violated human rights during parliamentary elections and a constitutional referendum in March 2020 in Nzérékoré, southeast Guinea, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.

The 43-page report “They Make People Kill One Another. Violence in Nzérékoré during the constitutional referendum in Guinea “documents the violence in which at least 32 people were killed and more than 90 injured when clashes between pro-government and opposition supporters during the elections sparked longstanding intercommunal and ethnic tensions in Nzérékoré. Security forces deployed to secure the elections did not do enough to prevent the killing or widespread destruction of property, allegedly killing two people and beating and arbitrarily detaining dozens of men, Human Rights Watch noted.
