(Goma, July 30, 2020) - According to Human Rights Watch, criminal gangs kidnapped at least 2017 people near Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for a ransom between April 2020 and March 170. Small groups armed with weapons and machetes have beaten, tortured and murdered hostages, raped women and girls who make up more than half of them, and used threats to extort money from their families.
