Corona deaths in relation to normal deaths in Switzerland

The real but wrong statistics

Statistics and graphics are used to visually and comprehensibly present a situation that someone wants to make clear to an audience. Statistics always aim to present something, otherwise they would not be created. Strictly speaking, the goal always comes first, then the corresponding graphic emerges from the goal to visualize what you want to say. (to influence the viewer in the desired direction). At the moment, the goal of the statistics and graphics is to make the public aware of the seriousness of the Corona threat. From this point of view, the currently published graphics are awesome. We get scared, the goal of difficult to portray the threat has been achieved and we tolerate the shutdown orders. Bravo.

Subsequently, the published statistics are supplemented with data and commented on and criticized in order to present their informative value on the correct scale.

You have probably seen this representation many times. First of all it is absolutely negligent to sum up any event and secondly without clear reference and relation.

I don't know where that comes from and who went to school where, but an uncommented direct comparison of the absolute number of cases in a country with 8.5 million inhabitants (Switzerland) and a country with 328,2 million (USA) and 60,36, XNUMX million (Italy) is definitely very questionable. It suggests that we are better than the United States and Italy, but that South Korea is in even better shape thanks to its strict regime.

The case numbers would have to be converted in relation to the number of inhabitants and presented in this way. That would show a different picture.

Again the same representation, this time with a reference line. The reference line (red) results from the average number of deaths that we have in Switzerland every day according to population structure. I have every respect for every death and inhibition to enter the red curve at all. Nevertheless, this representation shows a different relation. Statistically, around eight times more people have died from other causes in the last 40 days. This relativizes the tragedy of the corona as the cause. It cannot be determined or suspected from this presentation whether the corona dead died a little earlier because of Corona or with Corona and therefore the total mortality rate over the year due to Corona will not be significantly higher.

This graphic will also be familiar to you. Each of the plotted deaths is a fate that should be avoided if possible. But here too the reference line is missing, which puts everything in a real perspective.

The graph below shows the statistical number of deaths that we have to complain about every day in Switzerland. (red line) The original graphic had to be squeezed properly, otherwise the red line would not have had space on an A4 drawing sheet. This relativizes the original graphics and the message. The interpretation of this must be carried out by everyone with their own ethical standards.

The whole shows that the graphics that are presented to the public are specifically designed to stir up the fear of corona and justify the tough shutdown measures. The journalists and the authors of the graphics did an excellent job. What is not possible with these representations is that the population can form their own opinion, because they are simply deprived of the basics.

Whether this is correct and justified is questioned here.
