(Kyiv, May 18, 2022) - Russian forces, which controlled much of the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions of northeastern Ukraine from late February to March 2022, subjected civilians to summary executions, torture and other serious ill-treatment that constitute apparent war crimes, according to Human Rights Watch today.

In 17 villages and towns in Kyiv and Chernihiv regions visited in April, Human Rights Watch investigated 20 alleged summary executions, 8 other unlawful killings, 6 possible enforced disappearances, and 7 cases of torture. Twenty-one civilians described unlawful detention in inhuman and degrading conditions.
