Observation tips for the biodiversity week

It starts again on Thursday: the biodiversity week! Whether forest, meadow, moor or water - animal and vegetable diversity can be discovered in all of these habitats. The Naturschutzbund invites young and old to the biodiversity contest and gives tips for a successful expedition!

Observation of nature is an important tool to perceive and understand the diverse world of animals and plants. In order for it to be an unforgettable experience, certain factors must be taken into account. Because: Depending on the habitat and time of day, different animals and plants can be discovered. In order not to disturb them in their natural environment, one should always behave inconspicuously and calmly. Binoculars, a camera and a good dose of patience are part of the basic equipment.

Whether mammals, reptiles, insects or plants

Time and place are particularly important with mammals: while deer, for example, are best seen at dusk in meadows near forests, hares can be found around the clock. The wood shrew can also be seen on banks and moors during the day. In many mammals, the first offspring of the year can also be observed. The native reptile species - seven snakes, five lizards, a sneak and a turtle - are all under protection and prefer to be seen in structured, sheltered and quiet habitats. They love dead wood hedges, piles of stones and forest fringes, but also sunny hiding places in natural gardens. While flowering plants in all colors and shapes can be found quickly and easily photographed due to their striking appearance, you often have to be quick with pollinating insects such as bumblebees, hoverflies or butterflies to get a good snapshot.
