(Geneva, December 4, 2020) - Female athletes, mainly from the global south, are abused and harmed by sex testing regulations, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The regulations are aimed at women at running events between 400 meters and a mile, forcing women to undergo medical procedures or be banned from competition.
The 120-page report "They chase us away from sport": Human rights violations in sex tests by elite female athletes documents the experiences of more than a dozen female athletes from the global south who are affected by sex test regulations. Human Rights Watch found that global regulations that encourage discrimination, surveillance, and coerced medical intervention against female athletes lead to physical and mental injury and economic hardship. The International Olympic Committee - the supreme body in global sport - develops guidelines to combat human rights abuses caused by sex testing guidelines.
