Ural owl in the Vienna Woods: 26 chicks in 10 years


Ten years ago the resettlement of the first Ural Owl juveniles began in the Vienna part of the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. Now the Vienna City Gardens and the scientists from the Austrian Ornithological Institute of the University of Veterinary Medicine have taken stock:

“Since 2011, 140 young owls have been resettled in the Vienna part of the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. The basis for the offspring of the young owls is an international breeding network, in Austria there has been a long-term cooperation between the Hirschstetten Zoo of the Vienna City Gardens and many other zoos and breeding stations. They support the project and provide their young animals free of charge. "
