(Beirut, October 20, 2021) - Syrian refugees who returned to Syria from Lebanon and Jordan between 2017 and 2021 have faced serious human rights abuses and persecution by the Syrian government and affiliated militias, Human Rights Watch said in a release today Report . Returnees also struggled to survive and meet their basic needs in a conflict-decimated country.
The 72-page report "Our Lives are Like Death: Syrian Refugee Returns from Lebanon and Jordan" stated that Syria is not safe to return. Among 65 returnees or family members interviewed, Human Rights Watch documented 21 arrests and arbitrary detention, 13 torture, 3 kidnapping, 5 extrajudicial killings, 17 enforced disappearances, and 1 suspected sexual violence.
