(New York, July 28, 2022) – Moroccan authorities are using indirect and underhand tactics to silence critical activists and journalists, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The measures aim to preserve Morocco's coveted image as a "moderate", rights-respecting country while becoming increasingly repressive.
In the 134-page report, "They'll Get You No Matter What: Morocco's Playbook to Crush Dissent," Human Rights Watch documents a range of tactics that together form an ecosystem of repression designed not just to silence dissent voices, but to deter any potential critics. Tactics include unfair trials and lengthy prison terms for charges of not speaking, harassment and slander campaigns in state-affiliated media, and attacks on dissidents' families. Critics of the state were also subjected to video and digital surveillance, and in some cases were physically intimidated and assaulted, which police did not properly investigate.
