Workitu suffers from the eye disease trachoma. She can no longer see anything in one eye. She can see very little on the other. As a result of this disease, Workito's eyelashes curve inwards and become sharp needles that scrub the cornea harder and harder with each blink.
When Workitu learns of the possibility that she can have an operation on Menschen für Menschen in order to save her eyesight, she sets off with her granddaughter Hyot.
