"We can offer IT professionals from Ukraine a win-win situation"

Vienna – The number of IT professionals in Ukraine was recently around 200.000, there were 36.000 graduates of technical studies and 85 percent of software developers speak fluent English, according to data from international staffing agency Daxx, which specializes in Ukraine. “We have to offer those people who have had to flee their homeland prospects in Austria as quickly as possible. In Vienna alone there is a need for 6.000 IT specialists“, explains Martin Puaschitz, chairman of the specialist group for Management consulting, accounting and information technology (UBIT) in Vienna.

The UBIT Vienna specialist group is the largest specialist group in Austria and currently represents more than 11.000 independent IT service providers in Vienna. “The number of our members has grown by around 17 percent over the past five years, which is extremely rapid. Many of our member companies are also potential employers, although recently the need for skilled workers could no longer be covered by people who live in Austria,” explains Martin Puaschitz, head of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce UBIT specialist group. According to a study by the Industrial Science Institute (IWI), there is already a need for around 24.000 skilled workers throughout Austria. The resulting loss of added value for the business location is estimated at around 3,8 billion euros per year. “Not only can we offer people who have fled to Austria security, but we can also give them very good professional support. Many of those affected end up in Vienna, where there is currently a shortage of around 6.000 IT specialists. It would therefore be a win-win situation for all sides, especially for women from the IT industry," explains Puaschitz.

Hardly any language barriers in the IT industry

Rüdiger Linhart, professional group spokesman for information technology in Vienna, advocates not letting too much time pass: "First and foremost, of course, secure accommodation and food is needed, but a survey of skills should be carried out promptly in order to be able to offer people professional prospects," according to the expert. Especially in the IT industry, where English is used worldwide as a technical language, there are hardly any language barriers. "The IT know-how in the Ukraine is also very high, because the country was until recently number 1 on the market for outsourcing in Eastern Europe," Linhart continues. Austria must now act quickly in order to achieve the best solutions for everyone involved.
