Protect the Protest - Let's defend our right to protest
No Description
Protect the Protest!
Protest is an effective means of protecting human rights and drawing attention to abuses. But our right to protest is increasingly being threatened around the world.
We all have the right to demonstrate peacefully. We are free to jointly and publicly express our opinion and to draw attention to grievances. Protest has a powerful force for change and is an important vehicle to protect human rights and reduce inequalities. In addition to the classic demonstrations on the street in the form of elevators or stationary assemblies, protest also includes other forms of action, such as online activism, political petitions, actions of civil disobedience or art actions.
Protests bring about change
In recent years in particular, strong protest movements have emerged that have inspired millions of people around the world to take to the streets and demand justice - and with success! For example, the Black Lives Matter protests against structurally anchored racism, the #MeToo movement, which demands sexual rights and gender equality, or Fridays For Future, which draw attention to the global threat of climate change and put it on the political agenda .
Protests increasingly suppressed today
But the right to protest is currently under massive threat. State authorities in large parts of the world are resorting to new means to suppress organized protest. They enact repressive laws, arbitrarily detain demonstrators and use violence against protesters, sometimes resulting in death. In order to weaken protest, online content is censored and the internet is sometimes shut down completely.
The increasing use of artificial intelligence to monitor individuals and groups is also a massive attack on the right to protest. Because of the knowledge that they are constantly being monitored, many people shy away from exercising their human rights and taking part in demonstrations, for example. This applies more to people who are already marginalized and marginalized. A ban on facial recognition technology is therefore important not only to protect the right to privacy and non-discrimination, but also to ensure the right to freedom of expression and association.
Protect protests!
With the Protect the Protest campaign, Amnesty International is directed against the suppression of peaceful protests, shows solidarity with those affected and supports the concerns of social movements that work for human rights.
