Organic food 2020: almost everyone has access

The latest figures from the RollAMA market survey show an increase in spending on Organic food of 23 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. For example, organic food worth more than 713 million euros was bought in the food retail trade (LEH) last year.

“In terms of volume, sales rose 17 percent. This means that organic sales amount to ten percent of all food purchases in the food retail sector. The average annual household expenditures for organic products climbed in the same period by almost 21 percent to over 191 euros ”, according to the broadcast of Bio Austria. The extremely high buyer reach of 97% shows that almost every household turns to organic. “But organic does not only end up in the Wagerl every now and then: with an average of 42 purchases in 2020, a quantity of 50 kg of organic food was purchased. That means almost doubling the amount since 2016 ”, the AMA broadcast says.

An analysis of motives by the AMA shows: “Every second study participant stated that they eat less meat and instead pay more attention to quality when buying meat. 43% prefer to consume organic products. The approval of this statement increased compared to the last survey in 2017. "

According to RollAMA, the milk and natural yoghurt ranges have the highest organic share in Austrian food retailing. Eggs, potatoes and fresh vegetables ”are also well above average. Every tenth product in the fruit, butter and cheese product groups comes from organic farming. Organic meat and organic poultry grew strongly last year, albeit at a lower level. The organic share of sausage and ham has also increased. " However, the bread and pastries product group is not included in the survey.
