Filmmaker Ladj Ly grew up in Montfermeil in one of the high-rise blocks of the Parisian banlieue and has thus experienced violence, poverty, marginalization and conflict with the police. In one Time interview Ly tells, among other things, how he himself was regularly checked by police officers from the age of ten. He described this as "assault and humiliation" that people with Fear, anger and hate leaves behind - emotions that can be clearly felt in the film. Ladj Ly was also the one who filmed police violence in 2008 - an event that would later be the basis of his Oscar-nominated film.
In addition to the criticism of the media that report on these topics and promote clichés, the film is above all a call for help to politics. In his film Ladj Ly shows how violence occurs without trying to excuse it. Since politics, according to Ly, has been failing to recognize its inaction for more than thirty years, Ly took initiative with his school friends in 1994 - he founded the artist collective Kourtrajmé in Montfermeil, in which directors give young people from the neighborhoods the opportunity to be involved in the art scene and to get a voice.
However, to avoid the violence, according to Ly, the cops need to change. The first attempts were made at the end of the 2003s - but these were ended in 2005 by the then Interior Minister Sarkozy. After the riots in XNUMX, the government agreed to give special support to the hot spots - but Ly, who still lives in Montfermeil, doesn't notice much of these promises. The film "Les Misérables" - Emmanuel Macron has already seen the angry ones and was "overwhelmed by the correctness" of the film - this gives hope that this realization will lead to the screams finally being heard in the future.
