Economy for the common good goes science

Zeitschrift für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik (zfwu) publishes special issue "Economy and Common Good"

Following the first scientific conference "Economy for the Common Good - ECGPW-2019" and several research projects, the latest issue of the Journal for Economic and Business Ethics (zfwu) is published with a multi-perspective view of the economy of the common good.

The current publication (3/2019) of the "Zeitschrift für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik" (zfwu) is entitled "Economy and Common Good" and deals with the common good economy (GWÖ). The main contribution comes from Peter Ulrich, emeritus of the renowned

Institute for Business Ethics at the University of St. Gallen. The Swiss has set standards with his contributions to the "civilized market economy", for example. In other articles, the legitimacy of the understanding of the common good is scrutinized and the instrument of the common good balance is examined, among others by the two Graz finance scientists Rudolf Dumjvits and Richard Sturn. To round it off, GWÖ initiator Christian Felber has his say: He describes his vision of an economic order in which those companies that do business sustainably and socially fair have a market advantage: "As long as it is cheaper to harm the climate than to protect the climate, the majority of people will act against their values. The common good economy turns this incentive from head to toe, so that ethical business pays off and leads to success. "

A three-year course is currently running at Berlin's Humboldt University Study to analyze the implementation of an economy oriented towards the common good in practice, under the direction of Dr. Cornelia Kühn. Studies on the economy of the common good were carried out at the universities in Kiel, Flensburg, Valencia and Bremen. At the end of November 2019, 150 scientists at the Bremen University met at the Economy for the Common Good (ECGPW 2019) gathered to locate the GWÖ in the scientific landscape. Other projects, including a study on Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies eV (IASSin Potsdam and participation in 7th World Congress of the International Society of Business Economics and Ethics (ISBEE 2020) in Bilbao, Spain, in July 2020.

The Economy for the Common Good (GWÖ) was founded in Austria in 2010 and is now represented institutionally in 14 countries. She sees herself as a pioneer for social change in the direction of responsible, cooperative cooperation.

It enables...

... companies to look through all areas of their economic activity using the values of the common good matrix in order to show common good-oriented action and at the same time gain a good basis for strategic decisions. The "common good balance sheet" is an important signal for customers and also for job seekers, who can assume that financial profit is not the top priority for these companies.

… municipalities, cities, regions to become places of common interest, where companies, educational institutions, municipal services can put a promotional focus on regional development and their residents.

... researchers the further development of the GWÖ on a scientific basis. At the University of Valencia there is a GWÖ chair and in Austria there is a master's course in "Applied Economics for the Common Good". In addition to numerous master's theses, there are currently three studies. This means that the economic model of the GWÖ has the power to change society in the long term.
