Action plan against forced labor

Malaysia and Indonesia are the leading palm oil producers. Together, they make up 86 percent of world production and employ nearly 3,5 millions of workers, mostly migrants from poorer neighborhoods and countries.

The Consumer Products Forum's palm oil working group (CGF) has commissioned a report that seeks to understand the forced labor risks across the industry in both countries and how consumer goods companies can help put an end to the problem.

Peter Freedman, Managing Director of the Consumer Products Forum: "Forced labor is an endemic, global problem and the only solution is to work with palm oil companies, recruitment agencies, corporations and governments." And Sharon Waxman, President and CEO of the Fair Labor Association (FLA), who authored the report, says, “The Fair Labor Association's review of the palm oil sector in Malaysia and Indonesia confirms that forced labor is a systemic and enormously complex challenge that must be addressed immediately. We hope our report will result in meaningful discussion and concerted action to address the root causes of forced labor in palm oil production.

To take action and mitigate these risks, the CGF also has an action plan developed on the recommendations in the FLA report based.
