Warrington UK's first local authority to produce all of its electricity itself

The "UK's most advanced hybrid solar park" for Warrington Borough Council has been completed and handed over by Gridservice. The 34,7 MWp solar park in York is pioneering a new commercial model that uses 30 MWh battery storage and sophisticated technologies to maximize revenue and balance the grid - both during the day with direct solar generation and at night with that in the 30 MW battery stored energy.

The project generates enough energy to supply a city. In addition, the Warrington Borough Council in Hull is purchasing a second 25,7 MWp solar park, which is due to be handed over early next year. The deal will make it the first UK local authority to generate all of its electricity itself. Gridservice will operate and maintain both projects for their entire life.

Electricity from the York hybrid solar park will be sold on the open market, while Hull will cover the entire city council's energy needs. Warrington expects the two projects to generate millions in profits each year.

Warrington Parish Council Chairman Cllr Russ Bowden said this was "a major milestone for the community" and "will help us secure our energy supplies, take control of our energy prices, and help reduce energy poverty."
