TTIP 2.0: NGOs criticize secret talks about food standards

TTIP 2.0: Exchange climate-damaging agricultural products for climate-damaging cars

The EU and the US have intensified their secret talks on a trade agreement TTIP 2.0. For the USA, the EU food standards are of central interest to the USA, the EU wants to avert tariffs on EU cars. EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan spoke of "a long list of regulatory obstacles in agriculture" that could be "resolved" in an agreement.

What Hogan calls 'regulatory barriers' are bans on chemical hormones in meat and limits or bans on particularly toxic pesticides to protect our health and the environment. There are restrictions on genetically modified food to protect biodiversity and consumers. And there are restrictions on meat that has been treated with chlorine or acid to protect animal welfare and food safety. In order to avert higher tariffs for European cars, one is apparently willing to negotiate all of this under.

Together with the platform Anders Handel and 123 organizations from the EU and the USA Organizations from the EU and the USA, we call on the EU governments and the EU Parliament to withdraw support from the secret negotiations.

The current talks show once again that there can be no new trade agreements without transparency and the participation of civil society! Workers' rights, our health, environmental and climate protection are not negotiable!

  1. They can't count: Lower food prices in the EU mean more support for agricultural products and fewer farmers. (about 2/3 of the EU budget) Now I understand why the government is launching an advertising campaign about food that is too cheap - so that the grocer is to blame.
