122 cases of environmental pollution and human rights violations in 34 countries for which the Swiss company LafargeHolcim is responsible or should take responsibility. This is the result of research by Greenpeace Switzerland.

«The uncovered cases are explosive and the disregard of basic standards is not worthy for a Swiss company like LafargeHolcim. The dust emissions shown are simply a mess. In fact, I have to say that the Group's standards have unfortunately deteriorated in many areas since the merger of Holcim with Lafarge. " This is not what a Greenpeace campaigner says, but the former Holcim engineer and cement works emissions expert Josef Waltisberg, who now works as an independent consultant for energy and environmental issues relating to the cement process.

By “mess” we mean scandals that have been going on for years despite protests: a total of 122 cases of environmental pollution and human rights violations in 34 countries - mainly in Africa, Asia and Latin America - for which the Swiss company LafargeHolcim is responsible or ought to take responsibility. Mostly local laws are disregarded and international standards are not complied with. The cement manufacturer or its subsidiaries often use outdated technologies, so that people, animals and the environment are affected by harmful emissions.

In Cameroon, India and Brazil, Greenpeace Switzerland has carried out in-depth field research (http://act.gp/LHreport) carried out: interviews, sampling, further clarifications, photo and video documentation.

Matthias Wüthrich, Head of Corporate Responsibility Campaign at Greenpeace Switzerland, comments: “Just the sheer number of scandal cases uncovered in this Holcim report is a scandal, because they are evidence of a systematic disregard for corporate responsibility. LafargeHolcim must now intervene immediately with its subsidiaries and ensure that environmental pollution and health problems come to an end and that people affected are compensated. " With regard to LafargeHolcim's promises to apply the highest standards everywhere, Wüthrich says: “The Holcim case is an example of how well-sounding assurances and voluntary company promises are not enough. To protect the environment and the people affected, there is an urgent need for better and binding rules on corporate responsibility and liability for damage by globally operating corporations. "

The corporate responsibility initiative, which the Swiss sovereign will vote on on November 29, requires something to be taken for granted: Anyone who pollutes the environment has to clean it up again. Anyone who harms others has to stand up for it. Therefore: vote yes!
