Naturschutzbund supports the "Austrian Tree Convention"

Near-natural forests, in which branches and dead trunks are lying around and dead trees have not been cut, may appear untidy at first glance. But they are irreplaceable habitats for a multitude of plants, fungi and animals. Now he has  nature conservation association  signed the “Austrian Tree Convention” initiated by the Vienna Environmental Protection Department and now widely supported for the preservation of such valuable trees!

Old trees = habitats

Trees and forests have a comprehensive overall social significance - for example with regard to the climate, wood production, recreation, tourism and biodiversity. For plants, fungi and animals, old trees are diverse habitats and composite elements. “In order for tree cave dwellers such as bats and dormice, wood-dwelling beetles and forest birds such as owls, woodpeckers and hoopoes to feel comfortable, an incomparable structural quality is required, which can only be achieved if trees are allowed to grow old,” said Roman Türk, President of the Austrian Nature Conservation Union. Some species are even designed for this: Among the Central European tree species, juniper and yew are the most durable, with a lifespan of over 2000 years. Closely followed by linden and sweet chestnuts (approx. 1000 years) as well as oak (900 years) and fir (600 years).

While dead wood and forest-like trees appear worthless from a forestry point of view and in need of renovation, they are indispensable from an ecological point of view. Thanks to these special habitat structures, the native biodiversity is secured.

Austrian Tree Convention Platform

When looking after trees, those responsible come under increasing pressure - legal uncertainties and liability fears often lead to felling or drastic pruning. The Austrian Tree Convention, which countless organizations have now joined on the basis of an initiative by the Vienna Environmental Protection Department, advocates the careful, sustainable handling of our valuable trees and therefore requires legal bases. The aim of the initiative is a differentiated approach to safety, risk and liability around the tree.
