(Toronto, June 29, 2020) - Canada is not taking reasonable steps to support and repatriate dozens of Canadians illegally detained in horrific conditions for alleged links to the Islamic State (also known as ISIS) in northeastern Syria. The government should immediately return all detained citizens to rehabilitation, reintegration and, if necessary, prosecution.
The 92-page report "Take Me Back to Canada": Canadians in Northeast Syria Plagued by Alleged ISIS Connections "states that Canada has not brought any of the estimated 47 Canadians home - 8 men, 13 women and 26 children - since Detained for over a year in crowded, dirty, and life-threatening conditions. Most children are under 6 years old, including a 5 year old orphan. Since March 2020, Canada has returned 19 other citizens from 40.000 countries, including 100 from Syria, in response to the Covid-29 pandemic.
