(Bangkok, July 27, 2021) - Myanmar's military junta should stop tracking journalists and end their attacks on independent media, Human Rights Watch said today and released a video of the media crackdown.
Since the coup on February 1, 2021, Myanmar's junta has arrested 97 journalists, 45 of whom are currently in custody, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). Six journalists were convicted, including five of violating Section 505A of the Criminal Code, a new provision that makes it a crime to post or distribute comments that "create fear" or "spread false news". "Fake news" is all news that the authorities do not want to bring to the public.
