Persistent high temperatures are not only uncomfortable, they are also stressful for our body. Heat stress can lead to exhaustion or even heat stroke. Pre-existing conditions can worsen. Older people and people in need of care and those with cardiovascular or respiratory diseases, for example, are particularly at risk. The heat can also be dangerous for children and people who have to work outdoors.
It can even kill, this immense heat: According to scientific estimates, more than 2003 people died in the 70.000 heat wave in Europe, and more than 9.000 people in Germany. And even in the hot summer of 2018, which many may still remember, according to the Robert Koch Institute, 490 people died in Berlin alone and 740 in Hesse as a result of the hot days.
