(New York, Oct. 14, 2020) - The Indian government's failure to properly enforce its sexual harassment law is causing millions of women to face abuse in the workplace without remedial action, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The government should urgently ensure that the Sexual Harassment of Women in the Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redress) Act 2013 (POSH Act), as it is widely known, is complied with.
The 56-page report "No #MeToo for Women Like Us: Poor Enforcement of Indian Sexual Harassment Law" notes that women in India are increasingly speaking out against sexual abuse at work, partly due to the global #MeToo Movement, many, particularly in the informal sector, are still constrained by stigma, fear of retaliation and institutional barriers to justice. The central and local governments have failed to promote, establish and oversee complaints boards - a key feature of the POSH Act - to receive complaints of sexual harassment, conduct investigations and recommend action against abusers.
