(New York, May 26, 2020) - The increasing attacks by armed Islamist groups on teachers, students and schools in Burkina Faso since 2017 have wreaked havoc on children's access to education, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.
The 102-page report, “Your War Against Education: Armed Group Attacks on Teachers, Schoolchildren and Schools in Burkina Faso” documents numerous educational attacks by armed Islamist groups in 6 of the country's 13 regions between 2017 and 2017 2020. The groups killed education professionals , beaten, kidnapped and threatened. intimidated students; terrorized parents to keep children away from school; and damaged, destroyed and looted schools.
