Analysis: More and more Austrians are buying green electricity

The tariff comparison portal viewer analyzed its own contracts between August 2019 and 2020. The result: the certified share of green electricity has increased compared to 2016/17 - from eleven to 14 percent. With a share of 16 percent, significantly more women opt for certified green electricity than men (12 percent).

Reinhold Baudisch, managing director of durchblicker: “According to our analysis, 25 to 35-year-old Viennese women are green electricity champions. With 25 percent they achieve the absolute top value. The opposite pole, on the other hand, are men over 65 in Tyrol and Vorarlberg, where only 4 percent use certified green electricity. "

Further results:

  • While in the Age group of the 25- to 35-year-olds Austrians choose around 18 percent sustainably generated electricity, for the over 65-year-olds it is only around 10 percent.
  • Regional distribution: The share of those who use certified green electricity is highest in Vienna (20 percent), and lowest in Tyrol and Vorarlberg (7,7 and 8,8 percent, respectively). Central Austria (Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria, Salzburg) shows values between 11 and around 13 percent. In Burgenland, the certified green electricity contracts are below average at 8 percent.

It should also be borne in mind, however, that the analysis did not take into account the company's own electricity generation with photovoltaics. According to Statistics Austria, the expansion in Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Vorarlberg and Burgenland was the most advanced in 2019. Salzburg, Carinthia and Tyrol still had great potential.
