Saving water in the garden

Lack of rainfall is a problem for hobby gardeners. The "Nature in the Garden" initiative calls for saving water when watering and gives tips on how best to do this:

Water plants correctly:

  • early in the morning
  • targeted in the root area
  • so that they dry off by evening

The experts from "Nature in the Garden" explain: "Constant moisture makes the plants 'rotten', as a result they only form shallow roots. A high proportion of flat roots means that they are more sensitive to drought and dependent on irrigation. ”

A layer of mulch protects the ground from the sun's rays.

It is best to collect rainwater and use it for watering.

Tip for the lawn:

20 liters of water per square meter are sufficient on lawns for two to three weeks - provided that the soil is good and healthy.

Katja Batakovic, an expert at "Nature in the Garden", gives the following advice against the increasing drought: "In the short term, the right watering or mulching beds will help. In the medium and long term, planting plants adapted to the location and promoting healthy soil will help hobby gardeners to ensure that their garden thrives even when there is little rainfall. ”
