What does artistic creation have to do with climate protection? How do education and art fit together? The ZKM | The Center for Art and Media and the Ernst Reuter School in Karlsruhe have a lot in common: They are both places of education with great impact and role models. And both are committed to meeting the climate crisis and its complex challenges with their own actions.
On July 13, 2021, students from the Ernst Reuter School met with ZKM employees, the “Schools for Earth” team from Greenpeace and experts from the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg (ifeu) all-day workshop - the prelude to a close exchange process, right in the middle of the “Critical Zones” exhibition. The climate-relevant emission areas of the school and the museum were discussed together and specific climate protection measures were developed. The best of all worlds comes into play: The students bring their creativity and experience in dealing with change processes, the ZKM and the volcanologist and artist Karen Holmberg know about the communicative power of art and culture, Greenpeace and the experts of the ifeu institute contribute their specialist expertise. At the end of this first day of encounter, the possibilities of mutual fertilization, but also the specific challenge that the two institutions are tackling as the next step, were finally named.
