Switzerland imports large quantities of animal feed (such as soy) and meat. Many of the imports come from countries and regions in which forests are cleared for the production of animal feed and meat.

Deforestation releases large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which affects the global climate. On the other hand, it destroys forests that make an extremely important contribution to climate protection, house a huge variety of animals and plants and form the livelihood of indigenous peoples.
