Recycling bugs that you do not know you are doing, part 2: paper receipts

CONTRIBUTION IN ORIGINAL LANGUAGE

This is difficult. While non-thermal receipts can be recycled, thermal till receipts cannot be recycled. Thermal paper is also used for public transport and parking tickets.

Thermal paper slips are glossy and turn black when you scratch them. They contain the chemicals bisphenol A (BPA) or bisphenol S (BPS), which have been shown to damage the environment and human health.

Bisphenol A is classified as toxic in the EU for human reproduction and could affect our health by disrupting our hormones. Bisphenol A (BPA) will be banned from revenue in the EU by 2020, but alternatives like BPS have similar concerns. Switzerland has now banned them both.
