In the intoxication of negativity - Editorial by Helmut Melzer

Helmut Melzer

Man is already a strange being. At the current climax of evolution, with the current highest level of knowledge in his luggage, he still remains outdated survival strategies arrested: the human primal instinct to ensure that the negative is perceived and internalized far more positive experiences.

Social media and digital forums speak volumes: No matter what positive facts are put on the table, from the majority of shared beliefs one might think that the end of the world would be imminent. The fact that most of humanity has never been allowed to live so peacefully, intelligently, sated and healthy is simply ignored. The intoxication of negativity obscures the sober view of the facts.

To interpret dissatisfaction, fears and worries as causes of this condition, I think is misinterpreted. They too are only symptoms. Sometimes expression of personal powerlessness and an inner desire for self-determination and co-determination.

The freedom of choice how to live and what to do is always the true luxury. However, with rapid steps, we are now approaching a future that could leave this exclusiveness behind as well as man outstrips the limitations of his primal instincts. Not only are we at a historic turning point in terms of ecology, we also need to redefine ourselves as a society in the face of far-reaching technological advances.

For in the coming decades, automation and "intelligent" machines will accompany our everyday life and reduce our workload. The central question of what man then deals with is still unanswered. I see myself as a realistic optimist and recognize in this development - in all dangers - the potential for undreamt of self-determination. With the necessary separation of work and income - keyword: unrestricted basic income - we could leave the negativity largely behind us. Then you also ask the essential question: What do you really want to do with your life?
