Saudi Arabia Border Guards Commit Mass Killings of Migrants at Yemen Border
No Description
(London, August 21, 2023) – Saudi border guards killed at least hundreds of Ethiopian migrants and asylum-seekers attempting to cross the Yemen-Saudi Arabia border between March 2022 and June 2023, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. If these killings, which appear to be continuing, were committed as part of the Saudi government's policy of killing migrants, they would be a crime against humanity.
The 73-page report "'They Fired on Us Like Rain': Saudi Arabian Mass Killings of Ethiopian Migrants at the Yemen-Saudi Border'" found that Saudi border guards used explosive weapons to kill many migrants and other migrants shot at close range A widespread and systematic pattern of attacks saw numerous attacks, including many women and children. In some cases, Saudi border guards asked migrants which limb to shoot and then shot them at point-blank range. Saudi border guards also fired explosives on migrants attempting to flee back to Yemen.
