Greenpeace activists have sunk granite stones weighing several tons from the "Beluga II" into the marine reserve Adlergrund off the island of Rügen. This is intended to protect the species-rich stone reef from bottom trawling: cod fish drag their nets across the sea floor and porpoises and seabirds drown in kilometers of nets - even in expressly protected areas.
Marine animals and plants need REAL retreats to recover from overfishing and industrial exploitation. With the stones, we put an end to bottom fishing and do what politics only talks about: In 2020, the “good environmental status” in our oceans should be achieved again - we are a long way from that.
